How hard is the water in Eagle Mountain, Utah?
Short answer: Eagle Mountain water is hard to very hard. It runs about 6.3–9.0 grains per gallon (GPG) when your area gets surface water from the Central Utah Water Conservancy District, and about 14–25+ GPG when the city's deep wells make up most of the blend. This site uses ~16 GPG (274 ppm) as the typical blended figure.
Where does Eagle Mountain get its water?
Eagle Mountain blends two sources: city-owned deep groundwater wells and treated surface water bought from the Central Utah Water Conservancy District (CUWCD).
The city's 2025 water quality report (system #UTAH25142) lists both sources. Well water picks up calcium and magnesium from the rock it passes through, so it's much harder than the surface water. Because the share from each source shifts with season and demand, hardness at your tap can change through the year. Summer, when the wells run more, is usually when it's hardest.
What do the numbers mean?
1 grain per gallon equals 17.1 mg/L (ppm) of hardness. The USGS calls anything over 180 mg/L (about 10.5 GPG) "very hard."
| Source blend | Hardness (GPG) | Hardness (mg/L) | USGS category |
|---|---|---|---|
| CUWCD surface water | 6.3–9.0 | 108–154 | Hard |
| Typical blend (used on this site) | ~16 | ~274 | Very hard |
| Well-heavy blend | 14–25+ | 240–428+ | Very hard |
What does hard water do to an Eagle Mountain home?
Hard water leaves scale on fixtures, in water heaters and on glass, and makes soap lather poorly.
The city's water is safe to drink; hardness is a nuisance, not a health limit. What you'll notice is white crust on faucets and shower glass, spots on dishes, and scale in water heaters and appliances. The 2025 report also shows total dissolved solids (TDS) ranging from 148 to 1,320 ppm depending on the blend. The EPA's non-enforceable taste guideline for TDS is 500 mg/L. A softener does not lower TDS; a reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink does.
How do I find my own hardness?
Check the city's latest water quality report, or test your tap with a hardness strip. Many installers will test it free during a quote.
Size a softener to the hardest water you're likely to get (your summer well-heavy number), not the winter low. You can enter your hardness in the sizing calculator on the home page. Also see what a softener costs in Eagle Mountain and salt vs. salt-free systems.
Use the free sizing calculator and your request goes only to Guardian Soft Water, one local installer, never to five companies.
